You shall not steal a life...

8th commandment "lo tignov" (Thou shall not steal) is interpreted in Sanhedrin 86a as the "worst form of stealing"; i.e. kidnap - this is not because of a linguistic issue (GNV = steal in conventional sense) but since normal thievery is not a capital offense, the interpretive impulse assumed that garden variety theft wouldn't warrant inclusion in 10 commandments, so the interpretive tradition says it mean (in this context) thieving of person = kidnap, which is a capital offense.
